What Is DNS and How It Works
Overview:
DNS (Domain Name System) translates human-friendly domain names (like example.com) into IP addresses (like 192.0.2.1) that computers use to communicate on the internet.
How DNS Works:
-
You enter a domain in your browser.
-
The request goes to a DNS resolver.
-
The resolver checks records from authoritative DNS servers.
-
Your browser receives the IP and loads the website.
Key DNS Records:
| Record | Purpose |
|---|---|
| A | Points a domain to an IPv4 address |
| AAAA | Points a domain to an IPv6 address |
| CNAME | Alias of another domain |
| MX | Defines mail servers |
| TXT | Text info (e.g., SPF, verification codes) |
Tips:
-
Always check propagation after editing DNS.
-
Keep MX records up-to-date for email delivery.
