What Is DNS and How It Works

Overview:
DNS (Domain Name System) translates human-friendly domain names (like example.com) into IP addresses (like 192.0.2.1) that computers use to communicate on the internet.

How DNS Works:

  1. You enter a domain in your browser.

  2. The request goes to a DNS resolver.

  3. The resolver checks records from authoritative DNS servers.

  4. Your browser receives the IP and loads the website.

Key DNS Records:

Record Purpose
A Points a domain to an IPv4 address
AAAA Points a domain to an IPv6 address
CNAME Alias of another domain
MX Defines mail servers
TXT Text info (e.g., SPF, verification codes)

Tips:

  • Always check propagation after editing DNS.

  • Keep MX records up-to-date for email delivery.
